Rogelia Amarillas, Valley Music Teacher Dies At 99

February 15, 2018

It was a beautiful day on February 1, 2018 at mid-day when Mrs. Amarillas simply continued into eternal life, 2 months short of her 100th birthday. This will be impressed in our hearts forever. Born on April 2, 1918 in Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.

At a very tender age she began her music education, with private coaching. Her love and passion for music soon advanced her studies at the Conservatorio de Musica de Mexico. She married Miguel F. Amarillas, and in 1948 arrived  in Calexico from Nogales, Arizona. They had four children, Annie, Mike, Luly and Yoli.

She became very active in her community, and began her career as a professional  private piano teacher in 1954. Mrs. Amarillas became the first bilingual piano teacher of the Music Teachers Association of California in Imperial Valley which she was duly accepted as an active member in 1973. She took great pride in presenting the (MTAC) Musical Certificate of Merit to her Calexico High School senior students. Her joy and love of music contributed grace and values. Many of her students were inspired by her to continue their education by achieving a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in  music and becoming piano teachers in the Imperial and Mexicali Valleys.

A pillar of faith in her Church, Our Lady of Guadalupe in Calexico, which she participated in music and choir from 19611969, Calexico Women’s Improvement Club for decades, Las Vecinas Orthopedic Clinic whom awarded her Woman of the Year 2002 for her outstanding compassion toward children. Mrs. Amarillas was also one of the founders of the Calexico Hospital Auxiliary in 1976. An extraordinary lady full of joy and happiness. Her passing is filled by warm memories of her music, leaving a legacy in the thousand of little fingers she taught.
